The Mentalist: Red Moon (3.9) Review

The episode opens with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) responding to a call in the middle of a corn field where three people have been murdered.  One of the victims was a police officer and another was the girlfriend of Todd Johnson (Josh Braatan).  Todd is enraged that the killer took his precious girlfriend and he shouts that he will kill the person if they are found.

Lisbon decides to take the case and the CBI team set up shop in the police station in the small town.  One of the first leads the team follows is at the diner where Todd’s girlfriend worked.  When they interviewed a server they discovered that there had been a trucker that was stalking her.  When the trucker was brought in for questioning Todd was there and assaulted the man as he was going into the interrogation room.  Although his interview was a tad creepy they had nothing to hold him on so Agent Cho (Tim Kang) let him go.

Later Agent Lisbon was on the phone with Sheriff Mullery (Chris Ellis) telling him that they had someone in custody and during the phone conversation he was shot in the head.  When Lisbon and Jane return to the police station they are revisited by Ellis Mars (John Billingsley) who had visited previously stating that he was a psychic and knew there would be another murder.  Jane believing there is no such thing as a psychic decides to play along with Mars’ scheme and invites him to help out.

Mars decides to bask in the media attention he is getting and makes a claim that the murdered believes they are a werewolf.  Jane then convinces him that the murdered will strike again at the scene of the crime to set Mars up.  When Mars and the police show up at the scene Mars quickly runs away believing he is in danger and is picked up by Jane in his car.  Jane knowing all of this was going to take place takes Mars to a hotel for safe keeping.

Jane returns to the police station and asks Todd to meet him outside.  When Todd agrees Jane drives him to the hotel where Mars is hiding out.  Jane tells Todd that he can have his revenge without anyone knowing and he hands him a gun and takes him to the room where Mars is.  When Jane pushes Todd to kill Mars and get his revenge, Todd refuses which was evidence to Jane that he Todd knew that Mars didn’t do it.  The scene gets intense as Todd realizes this was a setup and points the gun back at Jane who is saved by Agent Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Agent Cho.

The story wraps up in a very interesting fashion as Todd is being help in a prison cell and tells Lisbon that he has information that he only wants to share with Jane.  Reluctantly Jane agrees to talk to Todd and just as he is entering his cell sees Todd fully engulfed in flames.  The next scene Jane and Todd are in the hospital room and Todd whispers to Jane “tiger tiger” which is a reference to the ongoing Red John storyline.

The Mentalist Red Moon was one of the better episodes of The Mentalist this season as the storyline wasn’t as predictable as most and there was an element of Red John as well.  Check out our page all about The Mentalist.

The Mentalist: Ball of Fire (3.8) Review

The episode opens in the office of the CBI where the team is gathered around watching Agent Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) bounce a ping-pong ball into a drinking glass.  He completes the task in one try which mildly impresses Agent Cho (Tim Kang).  We quickly move into the action when Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) are talking on the phone while Jane is at a produce stand.  Just as Jane hangs up he hears gunshots as he turns around and sees a man in a hooded sweatshirt coming after him.  With the help of the produce stand employee, who shoots the man, Jane is able to flee to a nearby shed where he calls Lisbon for help.  It isn’t long before the hooded villain finds Patrick in the shed and takes him to his hostage location.

The CBI team quickly realizes what is at stake and the band together like never before to try and find Jane.  Agent Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis), Lisbon and the entire CBI team head to the scene of the crime and start questioning the witnesses.  The first witness that helps them is a girl named Sherry who tells the CBI where the getaway car sped off to with a full description of the license plate and car color.  She seems like a great help to the team as they continue their search.

Agent Rigsby and Agent O’Loughlin (Eric Winter) pair together to follow Sherry’s tips only to find the car that she described has been torched.  Rigsby steps up and does some great detective work finding a fingerprint in the glove compartment of the car.  This was after Rigsby discovered that the license plate number that Sherry gave was incorrect.

While all this is happening the wounded victim has taken Jane to a house and handcuffed him to a pipe in the basement.  Seeing that the man is in pain Jane offers to help him to mentally ease the hurt with the intent to hypnotize him.  Just as he is about to finish his magical hypnosis, gunshots are fired and the man falls in a heap to his death.  Down the stairs comes Sherry who is actually a woman named Rachel.  We find out that Jane was responsible for putting Rachel’s father behind bars where he eventually died.  Rachel is determined to make Jane pay but Jane never apologizes for putting her father away.

Rachel verbally and physically abuses Jane for a bit even hitting him with an electric cattle prod.  After the torture subsides a bit Jane sees his opportunity.  The stench of the dead man on the floor was just the ammo that Jane needed to play a little reverse psychology with Rachel.  He asked her to move the man out of the room so Rachel did one better and moved the smell closer to Jane.  As the team continues their search for Jane and get very close, Rachel decides that she is going to bring Lisbon into the mess.   Rachel has Lisbon meet her in an abandoned store and brings her back to the house where Jane is.  While Rachel was out Jane searched the dead man’s pocket and found a pocket knife to try and escape the handcuffs.

When Lisbon returns Rachel decides to lock both of them up and burn the house down.  When Rachel is outside Jane has the brilliant idea to make it look like he killed Lisbon so she wouldn’t have to see him die.  Lisbon screams which brings Rachel back down the stairs from her gas dousing of the house to see Lisbon with her neck appearing to be cut.  This was just the additional time that the two needed for the CBI team to storm in just before Rachel was about to shoot Jane.  The entire team returns to the office relieved that their friend and co-worker Jane has returned to the team unharmed.

The Big Bang Theory: The 21-Second Excitation (4.8) Review

Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and his group get excited when they find out that Raiders of the Lost Ark will be playing in the local theater. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is quick to point out that there will be twenty-one seconds of unseen footage which seems to peak his interest. Because of the popularity of the movie Sheldon is insistent that they arrive early and camp out in line to ensure that they all get seats.

On their way to get in line for seats the boys and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) decide to stop by The Cheesecake Factory where Penny (Kaley Cuoco) works to get a bite to eat. Sheldon displays his dissatisfaction with the amount of time the dinner is taking. When Howard’s (Simon Helberg) girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Ruach) tells Amy that she and Penny are having a girls night, Amy seems interested as she has never been part of a girls night before. Amy inquires with Penny if she can take part and Penny agrees.

The boys finish their meal and head to the theater where they realize that Sheldon was right to be in a hurry because the line for the movie was quite long. This of course gave Sheldon plenty of comedic ammo to use against his buddies. When Raj (Kunal Nayyar) returns with number of people in the line Sheldon awakes from his nap to find out they might not get into the show. To add insult to injury Will Weaton visits the group and shows his pull getting to go right to the front of the line. Will uses his bets Jar Jar Binks voice to put the final insulting nail in the coffin as he passes.

The girls realize that Amy has so much to learn about life outside of the Science Department. Penny and Bernadette teach Amy how to play truth or dare which eventually leads into Penny refusing to answer a question about her relationship with Leonard. This scene had some funny moments but Amy’s character can be a little much at times.

The episode ends as Leonard and the crew get to the front of the line only to be denied because the theater is full. Sheldon, needing to have the final say as always, decides to sneak into the back door, steal the film reel, and make an epic exit similar to Indiana Jones’ retreat to the seaplane.

The Big Bang Theory: The Apology Insufficiency (4.7) Review

The Apology Insufficiency opens with Howard (Simon Helberg) sharing with his friends that he has reached the final stage of top-level security clearance and the only remaining step is that the FBI will be interviewing his friends to make sure his is a good candidate.  Unfortunately for Howard the FBI agent is the attractive Special Agent Angela Page (Eliza Dushku).

Agent Page first meets with Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) who is so focused on his fear of being sent back to India that all of his responses to Agent Page’s questions are redirected to his love of the United States.  This of course was after he got past his inability to talk to attractive women by eating rum cake.  Agent Page leaves Raj’s apartment more confused than when she arrived.

Agent Page’s second interview was with Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) who has convinced himself that the next beautiful women he sees he will courageously ask her out.  Special Agent Page questions Leonard about his knowledge of his friend Howard and the line of questioning quickly changes to Leonard asking her on a date.  After she informs him that she is married to a six foot Navy Seal he returns to his shy self and completes the interview.

The comedy hits a high point when Agent Page meets with Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons).  After comparing identification cards Sheldon confirms her identity and allows her into his apartment.  In true Sheldon fashion he answers her questions as only he would providing completely irrelevant answers about Howard’s disregard for Sheldon’s personal property.  Just as Agent Page is about to write off Sheldon he accidently mentions Howard’s destruction of the Mars rover and she decides that Howard is not fit for the security clearance.

Realizing that he just cost Howard his security clearance, Sheldon requests that Howard forgive him for his slipup.  After Howard refuses Sheldon tries to fix things and revisits Agent Page only to make the situation worse and almost get his roommate Leonard in trouble in the process.  Sheldon goes to the one person he knows can help, Penny (Kaley Cuoco).  The scene between the two was priceless as always and was also great to see Penny return to the show after her horse riding accident.  Sheldon knows that he has to apologize to Howard and to prove he is serious he offers Howard his coveted seat on the couch in his apartment.  Howard accepts his apology and the group reconvenes in Sheldon’s apartment to conclude the show.  Sheldon’s offer is short lived as he asks for his seat back after a couple minutes thus ending another great episode.

The Big Bang Theory: The Apology Insufficiency was another fantastic episode of the hilarious comedy.  The Big Bang Theory cast continue to drive the comedic value and direction of this remarkable show.  The return of Kaley Cuoco was refreshing as her ability to play off Jim Parsons‘ character really provide for some amazing comedy moments.  The Big Bang Theory is still going strong in its fourth season.

The Mentalist: Red Hot (3.7) Review

The episode opens with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) arriving at an estate because they received a call on a death threat.  Normally the CBI doesn’t get involved until there has been an actual murder but Jane and Lisbon are greeted by their wealthy pal Walter Mashburn (Currie Graham) from season two of The Mentalist.  Mashburn welcomes Jane and Lisbon and tells them of the death threat to the CEO, Yuri Bajoran (Alon Aboutboul) which they are briefed on my Yuri’s security chief.  Mashburn, Bajoran and the security guard go into Bajoran’s office to complete a deal between Mashburn and Bajoran but Mashburn runs out of the office just before it explodes.

Not harmed physically, Jane and Lisbon are taken back that the death threat appeared to be performed before their eyes.  Mashburn, who seems unphased by the explosion, picks up where he left off last season flirting with Agent Lisbon who appears unimpressed.  The team begins the investigation and can’t help but put Mashburn on their list of suspects because of the fierce competition between himself and Yuri.  The two were also about to close a large deal where Yuri was going to sell one of his companies to Mashburn.  But Mashburn plays it cool as he always does and offers to assist in any way that he can.

Agent Cho (Tim Kang) and Patrick Jane pay a visit to Yuri’s wife and while Cho’s is questioning her Jane slips away as he usual does to explore the estate.  Jane ends up in Yuri’s bedroom and seems quite interested in Yuri’s toupees.  Jane is then confronted by the cleaning staff and Cho and Jane quickly exit the estate.

Mashburn, Jane and Lisbon end up following a tip to a campground where Jane tells the two of them that when someone wants something their pupils dilate.  Jane carefully studies the two who have been flirting the better part of the show.  They continue on their investigation and as they are walking someone starts shooting at the three of them putting a hole in Lisbon’s shirt.  After they return to the CBI headquarters they begin to think that Mashburn was the target of the initial explosion as well as the shooting.

Jane begins to put the pieces together and asks Mashburn to host a party and purchase an item that Jane is going to buy at an auction.  The auction scene is quite hilarious and Jane ends up bringing the item to Mashburns party to bait the killer.  The party scene ends in Lisbon telling Mashburn that he better confess if he is guilty and Mashburn hops in his car, punches Jane, and drives off.

All of this was staged of course and Mashburn drives to his private jet where Jane knew his killer would go to look for him.  The shocker of the episode was that Yuri was the guilty party all along and hadn’t actually died in the explosion.  The competition got the better of Yuri and he wanted Mashburn so he wouldn’t have to sell him the company.  Lisbon ends up being very relieved and the biggest surprise of the entire episode was that Lisbon and Mashburn hook up.

The Mentalist: Pink Chanel Suit (3.6) – Review

As the Pink Chanel Suit episode opens we arrive at a funeral of the mother of Federal Judge Pauline Fitz-William (Cristine Rose).  Pauline requests that her daughter Sophie go and find her sister Abbey as she has not yet appeared at the funeral.  When Sophie goes to Abbey’s room she finds Abbey’s boyfriend murdered on the floor.  He had been stabbed in the back with a knife.

Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and agent Cho (Tim Kang) arrive on the scene with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) nowhere to be found.  As they investigate the murder of Sophie’s boyfriend Austin the team realizes that Abbey hasn’t yet been located.  Because the estate belongs to a high ranking federal judge the entire property has been under extreme scrutiny by the security team.  They stated that Abbey entered the estate the previous morning and nobody saw her leave since.  This of course confuses the team as they believe Abbey to be a suspect in the murder.

Patrick Jane shows up more than fashionably late as usual, making a scene with the security guard as he questions why he needs to go through the metal detector.  Jane insists that the head of security go through the metal detector as well, and as he does Jane keeps putting metal items in his pockets.  This was a very funny scene.

As Lisbon meets with Judge Pauline Lisbon is informed that the white supremacist Raymond Tubbs, who has been threatening Pauline’s family, is responsible for the murder.  Lisbon makes it clear that they will be doing a full investigation of the case, which infuriates Pauline and she threatens Lisbon’s job.

Jane quickly announces to the team that Abbey is most likely dead and is being hidden somewhere on the property.  He confirms this after he tries to steal the rug from Pauline’s office (because it resembled the size of an adult body) to see if he could get by security.  When he was unable to break through the weakest point in the estate security he realized that there is no way that Abbey made it off the property.

Jane then makes a wild statement that he believes that Abbey is buried with Judge Pauline’s mother in her casket.  Jane of course makes his speech during the funeral ceremony as only the egotistical Jane can.  The family being quite upset by the thought of opening the casket agrees to humor Jane believing he is correct.  After Dr. Saban opens the casket it is revealed that only Pauline’s mother is resting quietly in the box.

This of course was just Jane’s ruse to determine the reactions of the suspects to find the guilty party.  Jane and Lisbon end up hiding by the casket over night to eventually catch the killer.  Dr. Saban, who had been helping Abbey with her drug addiction, accidentally gave Abbey and overdose and killed her.  When Abbey’s boyfriend walked in after it happened Dr. Saban believed he had no other option but to murder him.  Saban then hid Abbey’s body in his room and was looking for an opportunity to get rid of it.  Jane provided him with the idea and he got caught trying to execute it.

The Mentalist: Pink Chanel Suit was yet another thrilling episode for season three.  Jane continues with his loose cannon antics that make the show such a pleasure to watch.  It has been a few episodes since we have revisited the Red John storyline so look for it to return in one of the upcoming episodes.

The Mentalist: The Red Ponies (3.5) – Review

The episode opens as the CBI team uncovers a horse jockey Bill Sutton, that has just been murdered. As the team investigates they find a ring lying next to Sutton with a note that says “forgive me”.  The team tracks this first clue and find that it leads to Bill’s most recent girlfriend Dalinda who had left him due to his bad temper.  Dalinda mentioned that Bill’s temper got him in trouble when he beat up a man after a traffic accident which took him out of horse racing for a few years.

Bill had just returned to horse racing and was graciously accepted as a jockey for Cobb Holwell’s stable.  The Holwell stable had been racing horses for many years and was recently in heavy competition with the Lockhart stable.  Being a fierce competitor Frank Lockhart said that any jockey who worked for Holwell would never race for him.  Frank even went as far as having Ellis Barnes threaten Bill Sutton to try to scare him out of racing.

As Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) continues to explore all of the suspects he soon discovers that everything is not as it seems.  Jane meets a new jockey Sam Starks (Olesya Rulin) who was offered the jockey position for the big race after Sutton’s death.  As Jane befriends Starks he learns more about the horses in Holwell’s stable.  It turns out the horse that is supposed to run in the big race had a twin horse the Holwell said was the faster of the two horses but wasn’t ready to run yet.  On a hunch Jane brings agent Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti), who is a skilled horse rider and asks her to ride the untamed horse.

As always Jane’s hunch was correct and when it was time for the big race Jane tells Howell right before the start of the race that he switched the two horses and bet $10,000 on that horse to win.  Confused and upset Howell gets furious with Jane because that was his strategy all along and he had already switched the two horses.  Howell’s strategy was to get the first horse to have bad odds and the switch the twin horses without anyone knowing and win the big money.  It was then that Jane discovered that it was Holwell who was responsible for the murder of Sutton because Sutton was unwilling to go along with this plan.

The beauty of the entire plan is Jane never switched the horses and ended up winning his bet as well as catching another criminal.   Another great episode of The Mentalist is in the books and definitely one to watch if you haven’t done so already.

The Big Bang Theory: The Desperation Emanation (4.5) – Review

The episode opens as Leonard (Johnny Galecki) looks around at his group of friends in the comic book store and realizes that he is the only one who doesn’t currently have a woman in his life.  Even the desperate Howard (Simon Helberg) has a girlfriend which not only frustrates Leonard but also makes him a bit sad.  Meanwhile Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is enjoying his cyber relationship with Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) because they both agree that they are not in an official relationship.  This situation quickly changes as Amy asks Sheldon if he would be willing to meet her mother.

Unsure of the relationship ramifications of such a meeting Sheldon rushes down the stairs to ask his roommate Leonard what this all means.  Leonard is more than happy to offer the suggestion that Amy clearly wants more out of their relationship.  This sends Sheldon into a panic as he tries to avoid all contact with Amy, even going as far as dressing up in a disguise to exit his apartment building.

After Leonard realizes that he could really use some companionship he requests Howard’s assistance setting him up on a blind date with Howard and his girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Rauch).  Howard happily agrees and the two scientists find themselves at a nice restaurant with Bernadette awaiting the arrival of Leonard’s date.  In walks an attractive woman who has clearly just stepped out of her most recent workout with her exercise clothes still gleaming with sweat.  As we get to know her better we realize that she is completely inappropriate and shares nothing in common with Leonard.  When the two ladies escape to the bathroom Leonard tells Howard that this relationship could never work.  When the ladies return Leonard’s date invites him to a wedding the following week with a hint that he might get lucky.  Leonard quickly changes his mind and agrees that a second date would be just fine under those conditions.

When Sheldon finally confronts Amy Farrah Fowler she tells Sheldon that the only reason she wants him to meet her mother is because it is a ruse.  After Sheldon returns to his relationship comfort zone he agrees to play along with the ruse and the two of them set up a very funny video chat with Amy’s mother where they discuss how they are going to have intercourse.

The Big Bang Theory: The Desperation Emanation is the fifth episode of the fourth season of the show.  Penny (Kaley Cuoco) did not appear in this episode as she was recently injured in a horse riding accident.  This is definitely an episode worth seeing as there are many great situational comedy moments.  Check out more episodes and information on The Big Bang Theory.

The Mentalist: Red Carpet Treatment (3.4) – Review

As Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) pulls up fashionably late he discovers agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and the California Bureau of Investigations team hard at work investigating a murder.  Agent Lisbon reveals to the group that the victim, who had recently been released from prison, is Henry Dahl.  Dahl was imprisoned for committing murder against Jenny Winters but recent DNA proof had been discovered to get him pardoned.

Karen Cross, the publicity hungry television journalist, appears on the scene.  Cross was the prosecutor responsible for getting Dahl thrown in prison during his original trial.  Dahl was offered money by Karen Cross to appear on her television show so she could convince her audience that he was truly guilty.  After the murder of Dahl Cross, who is all about her ratings, invites Patrick Jane onto her show so that he can display to the world his psychic abilities.  Jane of course doesn’t believe in psychics but agrees to appear on her show as long as she brings all of the murder suspects to sit in the studio audience.

Patrick Jane then pulls a pretty clever stunt having everyone in the audience hold an unlit candle he claims that the murderer will be revealed when their candle magically becomes lit.  Silence fills the room and just as the audience starts to think it is a hoax, Jackson Winters’ candle catches fire.  When Jane confronts Jackson his farther Max quickly steps in and defends his son stating that he was just trying to cover for his dad.  Max was so upset with Dahl for murdering his wife that he tampered with the DNA evidence so that Dahl would be released from prison and he could kill him himself.

The catch of the story was that when Max went to get revenge on Dahl he was already dead.  As Lisbon and the team continued their investigation they questioned Betsy, one of Dahl’s old girlfriends who had been having an affair with Dahl.  When Betsy’s husband found out about the affair he confronted Dahl who refused to end it so he murdered him.  Jane, Lisbon and the team wrapped up another case as they do every week.  Check out this page if you are looking to learn more about The Mentalist.

The Mentalist: The Blood on His Hands (3.3) – Review

The third episode of season three, The Blood on His Hands, brings back a few well know characters from season two.  At the end of season two we saw that Red John abducted Kristina Frye who turns up this episode after placing a traceable phone call that the CBI is able to track.  Although she is not at the home that the CBI searched they get closer to finding her.

Malcolm McDowell also returns this episode as cult leader Bret Stiles.  The CBI is working a case of one of his followers that turned up murdered.  Because the cult is very quiet about their members Patrick Jane has to do some of his usual quirky investigative work to get to the bottom of the story.  As Jane and Stiles meet, Jane realizes that Stiles is very aware of Red John and his whereabouts.  This makes Jane quite uncomfortable and at one point in the story he actually calls him Red John.  For those of you who are new to the show Red John is the murderer that Patrick Jane has been following from the beginning of the show because he killed his wife and daughter.

Stiles tips Patrick Jane off about the location that Kristina Frey is about to be murdered.  Patrick Jane and the CBI get to the location just in time to save her and bring her back to the office.  The strange thing that happens when they bring her back for questioning is that she doesn’t respond to anyone she just stares off into space.  Patrick Jane finally has an idea and lights a candle and calls for her spirit.  She begins to talk and states that she is actually no longer alive.

The show ends with Jane a bit puzzled because he doesn’t believe that you can speak with past souls like Frye believes.  This episode is setting up the next few weeks as I am sure we will get closer to Red John.  It will be difficult because Stiles has left the country and nobody knows his whereabouts.
